Why 90% of workout videos drive me crazy ...
|
It was a rainy day in Cancun, Mexico. I sat on a quiet patio balcony listening to the drumming of the tropical rain. My body shattered. I had just crossed the finish line of my 2nd Ironman, but while my muscles were exhausted, my mind was racing. Following the success of my first book, Get Me Skinny!, I had a burning desire to write again. I opened up my NASM fundamentals textbook, pulled out my notes, and started to write. I started writing because of something I just couldn't ignore anymore. Over the past couple of decades, I’ve watched thousands of people work out. I’ve watched their workout videos, seen the routines they post online, and observed countless group fitness classes. And I realized something shocking: Almost every single one of those people aren't working the right muscles. They're just going through the motions. Now, don't get me wrong...any exercise is good. Getting off the couch and moving your body is always a win. But simply going through the motions is highly ineffective. That disconnect is exactly why most people put in the effort but never see the changes they actually want. Most women I observe don't know how to turn on their back and lat muscles. Most men can't properly flex their glutes. And almost no one knows what or how to use their diaphragm. It turns out it's a neuromuscular connection issue. They go to the gym and put in all this grueling hard work, but it’s like swinging a heavy hammer when there isn’t a nail. Your time is simply too valuable to waste. If your brain isn't communicating with your muscles, you'll never see the results you deserve. You need calculated movements, not random guessing. That realization is the foundation of my book, Live Fit. But I knew a dry, textbook-style anatomy manual wouldn't help anyone. As humans, we learn best through stories. That’s why I created the character of Aubrey. In the book, Aubrey goes on a Wizard of Oz-style journey to turbocharge her fitness results by learning how to move properly. Along the way, she meets a doctor, a drill sergeant, and a wise sage. Each teaching her a critical lesson to fix those faulty movement patterns for good. Self-help books completely changed the trajectory of my life. I've read over 500 of them, and they gave me the exact insights I needed to grow. Now, I want to do the exact same for you. Today, Live Fit is completely free to download. Even better, I’ve partnered with a group of wonderful authors to give you an entire library of self-help resources at zero cost.
